If you wish to access the Library for the day and look at material on a reference only basis, or whilst you are waiting for your membership to be processed ( we strongly encourage applying for membership), a Temporary Library Card can be obtained at:

  • The welcome desk at Western Bank Library,
  • The Health Sciences Library at The Royal Hallamshire.

You will need to bring photo ID and proof of date of birth with you. The card will last for three weeks and you will need to bring it with you every time you visit the Library. If you are aged 16 or under, you cannot be given a temporary library card, and can only enter if accompanied by a responsible adult aged over 18.

Please Note: For visitors aged between 17 and 18 you can only apply for a temporary library card or an external reader ticket if your date of birth is on or before 30th August 2000.

Please note that visitor access to library sites is during staffed hours only, so please check opening times before you travel. Western Bank is the only site staffed at weekends that visitors can access.

Visitors are encouraged to apply for an External Borrower membership (fees may be charged) or External Reader membership.  There are also SCONUL and Alumni membership options available.

Chat is available during staffed hours.
