Q. Do I need to reference common knowledge?

You do not need to reference something that you know is common knowledge in your discipline. For example, you do not need to reference that the Second World War began in 1939 and ended in 1945. 

If you are unsure if something is common knowledge in your discipline or not you should reference this as a precaution.
