A preprint is the submitted version of a journal article, before peer review.

If the journal you have submitted to allows it, you can upload the preprint to a server such as arXiv, PsyArXiv, SocArXiv, bioRxiv, or Knowledge Commons.

This allows you to disseminate your findings earlier, cite the article in grant applications and receive feedback on your work.
